INPHOG has been instrumental in improving childhood cancer care and survival chances across India. Working together as a national network, INPHOG provides access to innovative treatments and addresses many important research questions. I feel privileged to be among their international advisors, helping them achieve their mission to give every child with cancer in India the best possible outcome.
At the high end, the remaining gap between childhood cancer survival rates in the developed world versus India is really hard to bridge. INPHOG’s programme is sharply designed to enable that, and it is a privilege to lend my experience to helping them as an Advisory Board Member.
The mission of SIOP is to improve the lives of children and adolescents with cancer through global collaboration, education, training, research and advocacy. INPHOG is one of the first institutions supported by a PARC grant, with greatly accelerated clinical trial capacity development and impact on patients. INPHOG’s accomplishments are a model for pediatric oncology research.
50 years of childhood cancer research have led to an 85% cure rate in high-resource healthcare settings, which leaves 15% more cures to find through continued research. In lower-resourced settings we have additional challenges to overcome, including incorrect/incomplete diagnosis, abandonment, toxic death, and excess relapses. INPHOG is critical for both research goals: getting to 100% and getting everyone to 100%. Once all pediatric cancer centers in India have joined, INPHOG will be the largest childhood cancer research network on the planet. It is already one of the most efficient and impactful.
